Methodology
These calculators estimate gross amounts under supported general provincial overtime rules in BC, Ontario and Alberta, plus an Ontario vacation-pay estimate. They do not calculate a complete paycheque or determine legal eligibility.
Supported scope
Overtime tools cover one provincially regulated general-rule hourly scenario, one regular rate, one correctly allocated work week, cash overtime and no special agreements. Vacation-pay tools use a wage-base amount from payroll records and an explicit service band for the relevant period. Every supported condition starts unconfirmed.
Salary, commissions, piece work, multiple rates, averaging, banked time, public holidays, special occupations, contractual premiums, cross-midnight allocation, termination adjustments and historical rules are excluded unless a matching page says otherwise. Tax, minimum-wage compliance and complete entitlement reviews are not calculated.
Classifying worked time
BC: daily time after 8 through 12 hours earns 1.5×; time after 12 earns 2×. Only the first 8 hours of each day enter the weekly pool. Pool time after 40 hours earns 1.5×. The week runs Sunday through Saturday.
Ontario: time after 44 hours in the employer’s defined seven-day work week earns 1.5×. There is no general daily overtime trigger.
Alberta: daily time above 8 hours and weekly time above 44 hours are compared; the greater candidate earns 1.5×. The candidates are not added together.
Use actual worked time, excluding unpaid breaks and other non-work time. Enter whole hours and separate minutes from 0 to 59. Blank or invalid fields never become zero.
Vacation-pay arithmetic
Ontario: the wage base is gross wages for a vacation entitlement year or stub period excluding vacation pay. Less than five years maps to 4%; five or more years, including an explicit threshold-during-period selection, maps to 6%.
The Ontario vacation-pay estimate does not determine vacation days, termination adjustments or every statutory wage inclusion.
Money and rounding
Overtime stores CAD hourly rates as integer cents and worked time as integer minutes. Vacation tools store the wage base as integer CAD cents and use exact percentage arithmetic. Each result rounds half up to the nearest cent once at the final category amount.
The overtime 1.5× rate is never separately rounded first. The stated convention is an engineering estimate, not a claim that every payroll system must use identical rounding.
Sources and version
Each calculator renders its own rule version and review date. A review date is not a legal effective date.
Current Alberta overtime and Ontario vacation authorities were directly reviewed for this release. Source links and worked examples appear on each calculator page.
Change record
11 September 2026: the partial first expansion release adds Alberta overtime and an Ontario vacation-pay estimate beside the existing overtime core. No independent payroll/legal certification is claimed.
